What to Look Out for When Buying Second Hand Mobiles?

Mobile phones are one of the most important gadgets that you must have in today’s time. Not only can other people contact you via your mobile phone but you can also get vital information through it. Most banks, financial institutions, educational institutions, online shopping sites use your mobile number to convey important pieces of information to you. Mobile phones are no longer the feature handsets which could be used to only text or call other people. Cell phones are now called smart phones because of the added features that they contain. They are as good as a personal computer as you can use them to watch movies, video conference, edit documents on-the-go, chat with your friends, click photos and then send them to your friends etc.

Such is the demand for smart phones, that manufacturers have started creating smart phones that are available to people with a shoestring budget. Motorola Mobility has come up with the Moto E which seeks to provide the best smart phone experience to its users at a price under Rs 7000. Micromax, Karbonn and Spice Mobiles are some other companies which want to offer you the smart phone experience at a price as low as Rs 4000. Some Chinese companies such as Gionee and Xiaome are offering high quality smart phones in the affordable budget range.

Even though companies are offering affordable smart phones to buyers, the quality of these smart phones are not very good. Buyers complain of heating, slowing down of the phone and other problems when they use less than standard smart phones. If you aspire to use a top quality smart phone, but do not have the budget to do so, it would be best if you opt for second hand mobiles.

There are a lot of second hand mobiles available in the market that you may opt for. These mobiles are in working condition and some of them are not even more than 1 year old. Buying these mobiles would provide you high quality smart phone experience. However, before you buy a smart phone, you need to make certain of a few points, otherwise you may land up with an inferior quality phone. Some of the top points that you should check for have been discussed below:

Model of the Phone
Not all models launched by companies are good. Several models are discontinued by the company not because they are old but because they had software defects. Buying a phone with software defects would mar your true smart phone experience. Therefore, you should research a little into the quality of the phone because you buy it. Read up user reviews to find out what first hand buyers have to say.

Body of the Phone

Prior to buying the phone, you must check the body and ensure that nothing is wrong with it. Check the touch screen keypad to see whether you can use it effortlessly or not. The sides of the phone must be checked for dents. You can also open up the back cover to see whether the battery included is an original one or not and how well the SIM and Memory Card slots are working. Look for big scratches along the sides of the screen.

Once you have ensured that the phone is not physically damaged, you can move on to checking the software of the phone.

Software used on the Phone
The software is one of the most important things in a smart phone. Usually iOS, Android and Windows are the most popular software available in smart phones. Even though it is advisable that you opt for as latest as possible software, it is ok if you opt for a phone which has a little dated software. Usually the operating systems send out updates for software which help to keep your phone up-to-date with what is currently available in the market. However, do not go for models whose software updates have been discontinued, no matter how inexpensive it may appear.

Call Quality
Phones are mostly meant for calling people and hence you need to ensure that the call facility of the phone is top notch, otherwise buying the phone may be pointless. Insert your SIM card and make a call to your friend or family member to test the quality of the speaker. Ask your friend whether s/he can hear you well and you too listen in closely on the phone. Plug in your headset to see how well you can hear the person on the opposite end through the headset (in case it is being included with the phone)

You can also test if the radio is working well with the headphone plugged in. This would act as a complete test for the headphones being offered with the phone.

After getting the phone home
Once everything is sorted, you can bring the phone home and test whether everything is ok. The first thing that you should do is plug in the charger to charge the battery. Once the battery is fully charged, you should see how long the battery lasts. Usually smart phones do not have very strong batteries and hence you need to factor that in when judging the battery of the phone. If it lasts 5-6 hours without interruption, you can consider it to be quite good for a second hand phone. However, if the battery dissipates within 2-3 hours, then you should consider getting the phone replaced.

There are many places from which you can buy second hand mobiles. There are many online classifieds websites which list used mobile phones on sale. You can enter your demanded specifications such as model, internal memory capacity, colour etc. and the website would show you the best ones available for you. Contact information of sellers is usually listed on the website and you can get in touch with the seller directly to find out the price. Make sure you opt for a mobile with proper papers otherwise getting it repaired from an official service centre may be difficult.

First Look of the Amazon Fire

Amazon has been a pioneer in a number of technologies such as the e-commerce platform and the e-book reader or Kindle. This time too, the company has launched a smartphone, the Amazon Fire, one of its kinds as the phone offers a dynamic perspective which is more than showing off things in 3D. The phone will be made available in retail stores and you can also buy this mobile phone online very soon.

Amazon Fire
Amazon Fire

The phone’s image is automatically adjustable because of 4 infrared cameras pointed towards your face that use head rays emanated from your body for judging whether you are viewing the screen up front, your closeness to the screen and the angle at which you are viewing. With the data collected, the phone adjusts the images displayed on the phone accordingly. Therefore, you will be able to see things clearly and in depth, bring things to foreground, zoom in to see better, browse through, books, websites and menus and play games by tilting the phone forth and back and down and up when you are looking at it. The feature, “Firefly” definitely heightens your sense of reality by converting objects such as phone numbers, CDs, movies, books and items of grocery into your phone so that you may take some action. Amazon being a shopping website primarily has paid close heed price comparison on the phone. You can flash your cell phone at any aisle in a departmental store to find a price comparison. Also, the phone is capable of recognizing close to 100 million items. Also, by linking your credit card to this facility, you will be able to buy the item with a few taps.

The 3D effect looks very good on the phone, at least at first look. Amazon has included a number of lock screen such as ruins of a pyramid, a few hot air balloons which are in a jungle setting and much more. By simply swivelling the phone, you can make the images appear like they are deep by an inch or two which will make you look beyond the foreground of the images only. It might seem to be only a superficial gimmick but it has its uses. For example, Amazon has shown how this feature can be used by Zillow, the real estate website for example. Once you have zoomed into an interior’s photograph, the app would allow you to switch perspective of what you want to see in the rooms inside. Even though slightly grainy, the image showed what it could be used for, even without a full blown 3D effect. Games on the phone also used the tool to a good extent. One of the games allows you to increase and decrease the size of the characters based on a nod from your head or keeping the phone upright or flat. A game called Tofu Fry uses 3D perspective at the gaming level. It is much similar to Angry Birds though but the 3D effect is a first time on a game.

Another very good thing is that all this is done with respect to your face. Therefore, you can practice all this by being upside down on your bed or lying down on it. The games would be handled in the exact same way as you have the phone positioned to your face. However, the feature needs some improvement when it comes to controlling menus and scrolling through tests. Hidden menus are brought on screen by bringing in side swivels quickly. For example, by swivelling the music screen to the left, you could bring up the panel which display lyrics of songs from the right panel. Also, when you swivel on the 2nd screen of TV viewing application, the X-Ray was obtained between character images when these were in their street clothes and costume. Yelp listing of local restaurants can be accessed by quickly swivelling the maps applications. When you are browsing through a website then tilting the handset away from your face would make the words move upwards. The more you tilt, faster is the movement of words.

However, these highly sensitive functions of the phone can make anyone uneasy because of the way one would have to keep his or her head steady otherwise accidental actions may be taken. For example, when you are viewing your favourite products using the Amazon firefly, you may alter the size of the image simply by a bob of your head. The phone is well built and offers other features. The phone has a weight without feeling heavy. The buttons which activate firefly or the camera are comfortable and look minimalistic. The screen size if 4.7 inches and has an aspect ratio of 16:9 so that the phone can be held and controlled with one hand. Also, for stereo sounds, speakers have been positioned on the bottom and top especially when you are holding it sideways.

The features packed in this smartphone are quite similar to those in the Kindle Fire Tablet like the live help Mayday function. The tool is certainly essential if you want to enjoy all benefits offered through an Amazon Prime membership that costs $99 per year such as listening to music, video watching and book reading. Also, the Prime is available for free for the first year. The dynamic perspective aspect of the phone certainly revolutionizes the smartphone industry and brings up a model that can be copied by a lot of companies and hence a new trend shall be set in the industry.

Prior to the launch even, Jeff Bezos, Amazon CEO had sent guests in attendance a copy of Mr Pine’s Purple House, his favourite kids’ book which has the moral that being different is good sometimes. The phone certainly draws a parallel to the purple house that has tofu sculptures hanging from hot air balloons. A lot of people may be interested in such a phone and it is only logical to be. The phone is certainly a good match for the Samsung and Apple products available in the market. The phone will soon be made available in market and now you can buy mobile phones online.

Reviewing the Microsoft-Nokia flagship product: Lumia 630

Nokia Lumia 630

Post the acquisition of Nokia, Microsoft has launched its first device, the Lumia 630, noticeably without the Nokia name. The phone is the first of its generation and requires several modifications. However, it is the start of something new which is appreciable.
The Lumia 630’s Dual SIM version has been released in India with the Windows Phone 8.1. Although it is cheaper than the Lumia 620, it is actually in a lower segment and not a patch on the phone. With new software and hardware to boast of, the Lumia 630 could become the next big thing.

Feel and Look
The shape of the phone is more block and flat than usual. The phone has sides along the rectangular body that taper back which makes it easy to grip the phone. The back part of the phone does not bulge too much.

This mobile phone has a matte textured colourful casing. It is nothing similar to the highly glossy finishes that were seen on the other Lumia models and this sort of a finishing picks up dirt and specks as soon as you expose the phone.
The front part of the phone does not have anything except Nokia’s logo on top as navigation is taken care of by soft keys. The volume and power buttons are on the right edge although there is no shortcut key for the camera. The left side is left completely blank while the bottom and top have the microUSB port and headset jack each. The rear has been left fully blank too with the rounded speaker hole and camera lens poking out apart from the hardly visible Nokia logo right centre.

The phone does not come with a USB cable or headphone. The charger is connected to a microUSB plug with a fixed wire.
Specifications and Features
A steady Qualcomm 400 Snapdragon powerful has been used in the Lumia. The processor clocks 1.2GHx on a quad core SOC with Adreno integrated 305 graphics. Only 512MB of RAM has been provided which is quite a downscaling from the 1GB placed in the Lumia 525.

The built in storage space given is 8GB which offsets the requirement to include external storage cards. Earlier models of Nokia could support up to 128GB external memory cards. The screen measures 4.5 inches diagonally although it has an abysmal resolution of 480X854 pixels. The pixel density on the devise is very low and it does not appear premium quality at all. It does not live up to the already low standard of Nokia’s device which offers bad viewing angles and limited colour accuracy. Even though the interface is not very grainy, the textual matter on websites and applications might remind you of high quality 10 years ago.
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity of the device is up to date along with GPS. Only an accelerometer has been included among the sensors. Screen brightness needs to be adjusted manually for the lack of an ambient sensor. The list of amenities offered by the Lumia 630 is lopsided and other phones in this price range out do it.
Software
The biggest attraction of the Lumia 630 is its Windows Phone 8.1 operating system. The update is much significant and there have been minor and major improvements. Outside India, Microsoft may boast of the Cortana, which is a voice based intelligence assistant. However, the feature does not exist for the Indian version of the phone. There are roundabouts which will get the feature working on the phone, although it is not much needed.
A notification shade has been added which users were waiting for very long. Microsoft has called it the Action Centre. Like in iOS and Android, swiping down from the top of the display unit will reveal an overlay that shows notifications that have not been taken care of yet. When the Action Centre is pulled down, expanded information about the icons on the notification bar like battery percentage are revealed. There are also some useful shortcuts like brightness, camera, Bluetooth and these are customizable, although not more than 4 can be added at one go.

Nokia Lumia 630
New Nokia Lumia 630
The device is the first Windows Phone that supports 2 SIMs and there are some new touches for it. For example, there are 2 distinct messaging and phone apps which is a little odd and confusing. The icons for the 2 SIMs are quite similar in colour while the first set becomes transparent in case the new option of background photo is selected. Fragmented inbox and call history lists need to be dealt with. However, contact lists are shared and making calls and sending texts from the other SIM’s app is allowed. It is quite useful for keeping personal and work communications separate. However, not everyone would appreciate this technique.

Camera
Nokia has always included numerous camera apps and this time it is no different. The Lumia 630 has Creative Studio, Cinemagraph and Glam Me for numerous effects that range from face enhancement to animation. The camera app by Nokia includes options such as manual focus, shutter speed, quick access to white balance settings and ISO.

The photographs clicked in daylight are quite impressive. Clarity and details are comparable to that of a camera on a phone which is twice as expensive as the Lumia 630. However, photographs clicked indoors are not that good and photographs become noisy very sharply even when they are clicked in office floors that are well lit. Photographs clicked at night did not have too many details and had too much of noise. The video appeared compressed and blocky and had an artificial feel to it.

The Lumia 630’s interface is quite smooth although browsing the internet is quite a task and playback of non HD video clips produced glitches too. The Lumia 630 will probably not last you more than one year or two, particularly if you include a lot of apps and the future operating system updates need heavier specifications.
The battery life is quite impressive as it lasted more than 11 hours in a continuous video loop test. The phone can be confidently used intensively through the day and you would not need to grope for a power outlet for charging your phone.

How to Choose the Right Cell Phone Accessories for Yourself

It is not enough to purchase just a cell phone. You should also have an idea of the proper accessories involved. Buying a cell phone without its necessary and imperative accessories will do you no good indeed. You have to make sure that you purchase the right accessories. The biggest problem that people face in this regard is the determination of the right accessories provided and on offer while purchasing the cell phone.

Here are the top accessories that you need for your cell phone. These accessories will help you go in for better customization along with contributing to easier and more seamless usage which is a big plus point. You can start using your cell phone just out of its box but these accessories add loads of functionality and pleasure. Take a look at the best accessories for your cell phone and buy these without fail!

  • Charger: Most cell phones usually come with a charger provided by the manufacturers. This type of charger is usually labeled a wall charger and is one of the most common types used by people these days. However, do you know that you can actually purchase more unique chargers with greater advantages in the market? These include the following:
  • Car chargers: These allow you to charge your cell phone seamlessly even while on the move. This has to be plugged right into a special outlet for accessories or the cigarette lighter plugin point provided in the car. This kind of charger is very convenient for people who travel a lot in their cars. There are rapid, trickle and fast chargers available for cars and you can use the cell phone even while charging the battery in this case
  • USB charger: This is one of the most popular types available in today’s times. All you need to do is hook up your cell phone to the charger through a cable. You should connect one end of the USB charger to the laptop or computer. This is a fabulous source of power and should definitely be tapped for better results and advantages
  • Desktop chargers: These are docking stations with base units for keeping the cell phone in its place. There is a USB cable that is used for seamlessly connecting to any laptop or computer for cell phone charging. These can also be used for digital music players and other similar devices too. However, while the phone is being charged, you cannot use the same with this type
  • Green chargers: These are chargers that make use of renewable energy sources and this is ideal for people who love the idea of having a low carbon footprint
You can also go for universal chargers among other things as these handy devices can charge any mobile device in a jiffy.

You should also choose the right cell phone cover or case for yourself. This is a much neglected accessory and should be a must-buy on your list. This accessory will help you keep your phone safe from bumps, spills, scratches and dust and grime. Alongside, you can impart a more fashionable look to your phone with this accessory. You can opt for pouch, body glove and faceplate covers among other types. The latter is usually a case made of plastic and this is put right over the mobile phone casing. This offers scratch and bump protection. You can use various designs and colors to customize your overall phone appearance. The original phone casing might need to be removed in some cases. The pouch type of cover totally enfolds the phone and this is the best method of protection. Pouches do not cost much and come in multiple designs and colors too.

The body glove option provides greater durability as well. This prevents scratches and minimizes the impact of shocks if you end up dropping the cell phone in question. Neoprene is used to create the body glove case type and this ensures a tighter fit around the cell phone casing. The skins are usually manufactured from durable plastic. These can be attached to the casing of any phone for greater protection and durability along with a much needed dose of style for your cell phone!

You should also make use of a memory card to heighten your overall cell phone usage experience. Memory card compatibility is a standard feature of most feature and smartphones these days. An additional battery will keep you insulated from these problems with elan. You can buy additional batteries without paying a hefty sum from your own pocket.

Lenovo Flex 10 - An Insightful Review

Lenovo is attempting to model its Windows 8 touch enabled notebook in yet another design. The screen is not detachable and cannot be twisted 360 degrees for an experience like that of using a tablet. The Lenovo flex 10 attempts to get over the problem of going across the trackpad and keyboard for interacting using the touchscreen.

The lid of the Flex 10 can be folded flat on its back and then rotated up to 300degrees almost. It can be kept with its upside down keyboard deck which can double up as a support. In this manner, the screen goes down to a suitable angle which is also close to you.

Lenovo Flex 10
Lenovo Flex 10

Feel and Look

At first, you would think that the Flex 10 is a premium gadget. It appears solid and sturdy with very good quality finishing. The lid is neutral brown and deep with the texture of a cloth. Even though the device is made of plastic, it does not look cheap. The bottom too looks pretty good.

The Flex 10 is not the lightest or thinnest device around. The ports, even though not many, are placed on the right and left edges. The volume and power button have been placed on the edges so that they can be accessed no matter how the device has been placed. When the hinge is opened, you would be surprised to note that the screen is much smaller than its lid and its side bezels are thick by almost an inch. A bright and large Lenovo logo has been placed above its screen which can act as a distraction.

By contrast, the keyboard fills up the width of the gadget. Although most of the keys are there and not in a crammed fashion the keyboard is quite shallow itself. Your style of typing needs to be adjusted in order to get a satisfactory performance out of the keyboard.

The touchpad is quite crammed and can get quite annoying. It is much small for common usage. There is very little space for resting your wrists on the side which can affect your overall comfort level. The main attraction of the Flex 10 is that the screen can be tilted backwards enough to prop the full unit on the keyboard deck to form a base. It would make a stand for the screen so that you do not have to lay your hands out for using it. The screen cannot fold flat on the rear of its lower deck unlike the Yoga hybrids hence the screen cannot be used as a tablet.

Specifications

The laptop works in a meagre Intel Celeron CPU, N2805 dual core which works at 1.46 GHz. It is founded on the bay Trail which is why it works on little power. The graphics processor used is also not of a very high quality.

The processor can take care of instructions in 64 bit although the Flex 10 is sold with the 32 bit Windows version. Even if you do not execute heavy software, you might face a few restrictions which could be evaded altogether.

The laptop has 2GB RAM and 500 GB hard drive which runs at 5,400rpm. There are probably no vents in the machine and the only cut outs are for the stereo twin speakers placed on lower part of the front edge. Only 2 USB ports have been included in the machine, of which one supports USB 3.0.

These are the sole physical ports along with the headset jack and HDMI video output. A couple of USB ports more and a SD card slot would be much appreciated by users. Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi b/g/n are the two options for wireless connectivity.

The LCD panel screen has a resolution of 1366X768 which is quite low. However, given the size, it works quite well as objects are displayed clearly and crisp. However, the surface does not offer good viewing angles and is very reflective. The volume rockers have been placed in a way to make them feel natural when the keyboard is folded that means they are placed in the incorrect way when the Flex 10 is used like a normal laptop.

Performance

Even though the laptop has good construction and an intriguing design, the components are moderately weak because Lenovo hastaken the decision to introduce the product for the lower end market. The performance is comparable to the latest Windows 8 tablets and low budget CPUs. However, the tasks that involved graphics performed very badly.

It is evident that Lenovo utilized its resources to make the device look visually appealing. The functionality can be at best described as that of a new netbook- sufficient for creating documents and surfing the internet and watching an occasional movie. However, it is unsuited for serious tasks

Because of the touchscreen, several apps from the Windows store can be used on it, but nothing very heavy. What you should bear in mind is that most of the keyboard is blocked when you require the keyboard on screen. Kids might like playing with the musical or drawing applications.

The battery of the Flex 10 lasts roughly 2 hours and 42 minutes. Video and audio performance in general was quite average. Videos which were played at 1080p were quite lagged but the maximum level of volume is quite impressive.

To Conclude

The Lenovo Flex 10 does not come cheap despite being a device at the entry level. A more powerful notebook can be bought for the identical amount, even though you have to sacrifice the swivel and touchscreen features. Between performance & appearance, it would always be wiser to opt for the former.

The lithe design cannot be counted as a merit on this device. The screen is not big enough for enjoying movies and there are not too many tasks that you can perform in the propped up position that you cannot on a regular laptop. If its keyboard was slightly more user friendly and switching between the two modes was easier, then the laptop would find a larger buyer base.

The Lenovo Flex 10 although fascinating, will probably not become a sought-after product. It appears to be like another factor form experiment of Lenovo.

HTC launches its First Budget Android Device: The Dual SIM Desire 310

HTC's Desire 310 is the first budget Android phone coming from these makers and it looks like the HTC has finally decided to cater to the low end segment of consumers as well with a few more devices of budget friendly prices to be coming out soon. In fact the HTC Desire 210 is expected to be priced even lower when it shall hit the markets. For now we have to see if the 310 makes a good entry level phone or for some it may be belong to the mid-range tier.

HTC Desire 310
HTC Desire 310

HTC lovers will get the opportunity to own an HTC phone at a pocket-friendly price but a detailed review makes it clear that the Desire 310 may not exactly be the best choice even for the price at which it is available.

Ergonomics

The designing of the Desire 310 is much like what its costs: cheap and low cost. There is nothing much to note about and it weighs around 140g which is pretty overweight with a cookie-cutter rounded slab appearance. It measures about 0.44" in width which makes it quite chubby for its size. The polycarbonated matte finish back is a plus point as it prevents fingerprints to quite an extent.

The volume and power button are placed at the right side which is more or less ergonomical but tactile feedback is quite poor in performance. The volume button is too soft and must be handled with care because it looks prone to damage very easily.

The overall size makes it easy for single handed use. It is available in hues of white and dark blue. The removable rear cover reveals a 2000mAh battery with slots for two SIM cards and a regular slot for the microSD card. The micro-USB port and the 3.5mm headset jack are located at the top edge of the phone.

It has a front facing VGA camera and front-firing speaker, plus points for the phone. There are no physical buttons and one has to use the onscreen buttons for navigation which poses to be a bit of hindrance when using the onscreen keyboard considering the small display size.

Display

The HTC Desire 310 has a display glass size of 4.5 inches with a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels which is not much and you can't expect any higher. The IPS panel offers a pixel density of 218 ppiwhich is very average and not that impressive at all but considering its class, one can't complain much.

Colour temperature of the screen is very cold resulting in images of bluish white and greyish colours and the colour reproduction is completely off. Even the primary and secondary colours show major discrepancies which can be particularly distinguished in colours of green, magenta and cyan.

Display is absolutely poor for outdoor use even in overcast weathers. Its brightness peaks at 288 nits and even though we understand it’s a budget friendly phone, one expects certain minimal standards.

Tech Specs

The HTC Desire 310 features a Mediatekquad-core processor MT6582 that clocked at 1.3GHz and a very meagre RAM of 512MB. It also features Mali graphics of 200MP2. The European edition of the Desire 310 features a 1GB worth of RAM. Internal storage provided is of 4GB but users have access to only 1GB which is pretty useless. One is compelled for storage expansion via microSD which is limited to 32GB. The micro SIM cards work in active stand-by mode. The battery is of 2000mAh that claims to offer up to 852 hours of standby time and 11 hours of talk time.

Use of the older Android version for the Desire 310 takes up further screen space apart from the navigation buttons occupying sufficient space as already mentioned earlier. Similar to its other version phones, the app launcher has app icons arranged vertically and offers Sense integration. There is no customisation feature available for users.

Camera

The front facing camera of the HTC Desire shoots on VGA mode while the 5MP rear camera performs below standards with no flash or autofocus feature. The rear camera however is capable of capturing 1080p videos.

Overall camera performance is very bad, producing a lot of noise even in photos captured in daylight. Since the camera is of such poor quality, even footage captured in videos turn out to be very bad and pointless. The front camera is also a let-down with a maximum resolution of 640 x 480.

The camera app offers panorama and HD modes but one can't really expect much out of them either considering the poor camera performance.

Overall performance

With Google's launch of Android's Ice Cream Sandwich version 4.0, gadgets could be optimised to its full potential. However, this also depends to some extent on the capabilities of the phone and how it is able to perform in use. The 512 RAM which is obviously insufficient for the phone causes the phone to stutter and lag even in the smallest of daily application use. Casual gaming will perform just about average on the HTC Desire 310.

The battery lasts for an average of 6hours 23 minutes when used for continuous video loop; moreover the 720p video quality is average while the 1080p video has a problem thereby skipping frames while recording and playing.

The only good and standard feature that one can find in the HTC Desire 310 is the clarity of sound and its speakers and how well it performs even in areas of low signal.

Verdict

Priced at Rs. 11,358, it is not really advisable to go for such an averagely performing phone because considering the market availability of Android phones these days, there is no dearth of better quality phones assuring quality performance and features even at slightly lower or similar prices.

The HTC Desire 310 is pretty much comparable to the Moto G but considering the mid-budget market, HTC has to offer better features if it has to survive the tough market competition. Pricing is not that friendly either if one tallies it with what he gets in return.

Critical Comparison among Nokia X, Nokia Lumia 520 and Xolo Q900

Audio & Visual Performance
Nokia X

The Nokia Lumia 520 and Nokia X have a sporty screen of 4-inch that is supported by IPS LCD panels. When compared regarding brightness, contrast, viewing angles, outdoor visibility and contrast, Lumia 520 is best even after having non-retina panel for display. The touch of Lumia 520 is ultra sensitive which has the potential to detect touch even through gloves. The Nokia X has a dual point multi touch unit which is absent in Lumia 520. There is nothing notable about the display of Nokia X as it’s quite dull.

Now talking of the Xolo Q900, the screen is of 4.7 inch supporting 720p HD display along with TFT panels. The viewing angle of Xolo Q900 is wide and vibrantly bright screen. The drawback is scratch proof protection layer which makes the screen excessively glossy and the contrast function is not that catchy.

Of all the three, the Nokia X is known to have the loudest and clearest speaker. The Lumia 520 just follows is with a little checked sound output. The speakers of Xolo Q900 are very low compared to the other two phones. When an enhancement is attached, the volume output of Lumia 520 is undoubtedly the best of the three.

Hardware Performance
Xolo Q900Legally, Xolo Q900 is recorded to have better processor than the other two Nokia phones but when minutely tested, the Lumia 520 is noted for faster and better performance, especially in daily-life use. This may even be a result of the Operating System because Windows 8 is known as a hardware friendly operating system.

The Xolo Q900 has a quad-core MediaTek MT6589 processor with a 1GB RAM that helps in fast operating when compared to Nokia X. The Nokia X has the simple dual core Snapdragon 200 processor with a RAM of 512MB only. Though the internal storage capacity is 4GB in case of both Xolo Q900 and Nokia X. in this phase the Lumia 520 has defeated both of them with an inbuilt memory of 8GB. All the three phones have external memory storage facility via microSD Card.

The Lumia 520 and Xolo Q900, both are efficient in case of playing games but Nokia X is not so supportive when it comes to games. The hardware can support some nominal games like Temple Run or Angry Bird but nothing beyond this with high graphics can be expected. There is a proximity sensor and accelerometer in both Nokia Lumia 520 and Nokia X. Apart from all these the Xolo Q900 has an e-compass and other necessary features.

Software & User Interface

The software version of Nokia X is Android 4.1.2 (JellyBean) assisted by FastLane and a User Interface Design that is almost an imitation of Windows Phone. There are two distinct divisions of the home screen, the app launcher and FastLane.

There is a list of all apps in the app launcher from where widgets can also be set. The FastLane is a place where all the recent notifications can be found as well as the recently utilized apps. Although the phones have Android OS, still no signs of Google Play Store can be found but instead Nokia has provided their very own App Store for installing desired apps. The phone has Nokia’s HERE Map, BBM, Nokia MixRadio and True-Caller already installed. The Nokia app store provides basic and nominal apps for more apps one has to install 1Store or any other app store.

The Lumia 520 has Windows 8 (Phone) operating system with the Nokia Black. The Nokia HERE Maps, MS Office tools, Nokia MixRadio are already available in this phone. The Live Tiles behave like small widgets which gives a peck of any information.

The Xolo Q900 is operated by Android 4.2.2 JellyBean which is not an updated version but still passable. Xolo Q900 has pre-loaded apps such as notes app; file manager, sound recorder, Xolo Secure and Xolo Power. The Xolo Power is a battery management app that helps the user to set night mode, data sync interval and even low-battery mode. The Xolo Secure helps is keeping any personal mobile data safe and secure when the phone is lost. It acts as a device tracker as well and data can be removed or inserted remotely.

Connectivity & Battery Life

The Xolo Q900 and Nokia X are two SIM smartphones but Lumia 520 supports only one SIM. All the three devices have the facility of 3G, Wi-Fi hotspot, Wi-Fi b/g/n, A-GPS, Bluetooth and even MicroUSB ports. The Bluetooth version of Nokia X is v3.0 but in case of the other two devices, it is Bluetooth v4.0 connectivity.

In case of cellular data connectivity, the Nokia X is slowest with a speed of 7.2 Mbps whereas the Xolo Q900 has 42Mbps and Lumia 520 has 21Mbps of data download speed.

The battery of Nokia X is pretty decent compared to its price and size. It is 1500 mAh which doesn’t have the potential to last as long as the Lumia 520. The Nokia X can last for a day or half at the max while Lumia 520 can last almost for two days with a 1430 mAh battery. Xolo is the fastest of all the tree devices, in terms of connectivity. But Xolo Q900 cannot last for more than a day even after regular use as it is provided with 1800 mAh battery.

Pricing & Value

The price of Lumia X is Rs. 7,500 which is almost the same as Lumia 520. The Xolo is however priced around Rs. 9,658, which is Rs. 2,000 higher than the other two Nokia phones.

Most experts would suggest you not to go for the Nokia X as it does not have an effective hardware feature when compared to its price. One should wait for the Nokia XL though. Xolo is quite good as an Android device as it has a smart screen with classic camera although it cannot give proper battery back-up like the Lumia 520 while watching video or playing games.

Gionee Elife S5.5 To Be Available In India From 27 April

Gionee announced the Elife S5.5 last month at the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona and claimed it to be the world’s slimmest phone. Priced at Rs 22, 999, the phone will be available on shelves from April 27. The device was launched in China on March 18 and announced in India on March 31. India is one of the 40 countries where the phone is being launched and it is the second most prioritized country after China, to which the manufacturer belongs. The company president, William Lu, has said India is an important market for them at the time of making the announcement.

Mr. Lu has also said that the company constantly endeavours to bring in new technology always. Arvind Vohra, Gionee India Head has stated that the company has seen an increase in popularity within a year of beginning operation in India. It has experienced unprecedented growth especially with the ELIFE series.

The company started its operations in India in March 2013 and has so far done over Rs 500 crores worth of business. The company has a target turnover of Rs 2500 crore by the end of 2014-15 financial year. So far, the company has launched 14 mobile handsets in the country and 11 of them are smartphones. The number of service centres will also be increased to 750 from 400 by the end of fiscal year 2015. A budget of Rs 150 crore has been set aside for marketing and brand building, as stated by Mr Arvind Vohra.

The company targets states such as Gujarat, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab as its market and wants to woo crowds in the metros as well.

Globally, Gionee earned revenues worth $2.5 billion globally by selling 24 million handsets over the world last year. Of the 24 million handsets sold, a million were in India. For this year, the company targets to sell 35 million handsets globally of which 6 million will be in India. Gionee is ranked 10th among the shareholders of smartphones markets and is slated to break into top 5 within the next 5 years. It was the ODM or original device manufacturer for several Indian brands and made a foray directly into the market in the 2013’s first quarter.

The launch event took place in Goa where the firm claimed that the ELIFE S5.5 was the best engineered product. The first impressions of the product are not too bad and they do not spell the final verdict for the phone.

Design, Build and Display

The thick metal chassis feels and looks premium while the display unit has been made with corning gorilla glass. The display unit is Super Amoled and is fully HD. The tactile feedbacks on power and volume rockers are good. Both the buttons have been placed along the left panel. The similar positions of the two buttons are good for single handed operations. The USB charging point and 3.5mm jack have been placed on top.

The back and front glass covering is quite similar to what has been noted on the Nexus 4. However, all this is held in aluminium metal chasses with an ultra slim body of 5.5mm. The phone weighs 130 grams which is a little more than what the iPhone 5S weighs (112g). The right panel of the phone has a SIM card slot close to the top and is covered with rubber. The first look of the design and build is quite impressive.

The display unit is 5 inch long and fully HD. It has a pixel density of 441ppi. The display unit offers good viewing angles and is not very reflective. Texts look sharp and colour reproduction is quite precise. The display unit may turn out to be a strong point for the device.

The device performed well for video playbacks although reproduction of sound was not very good. With sound modulation, the body vibrates a little which can be quite annoying.

An octa core processor that clocks speed of 1.7 GHz is being used in the phone. The battery used in it will be 2,300 mAh although it will be upgraded to 2460 mAh in the next upgrade of the phone. The Elife S5.5 shall also support HSPA+42MBPS in 6 different band sets which would allow it to function in most WCDMA 3G coverage areas.

Camera
Until you hold it in your hands, it would be difficult to believe that the maker managed to squeeze in a 13MP primary camera and a 5MP secondary camera in the 5.5mm thick aluminium metal body. The LED flash on the back camera however is not blended in completely with the back cover and it protrudes outwards slightly.

The placement of the edges is a little uncomfortable as users may get their fingers in the frame while holding the camera. Even though the camera is yet to be tested at length, the 13MP shooter offers an average performance.

Software Used on the Phone

The ELIFE S5.5 uses Android Jelly Bean or 4.2 as the base and the Amigo UI is the customized skin for it. The feel of the software is similar to that of the Elife E7 although the company claims it is an improvement over the previous model. Further inspection is required to tell the difference between the two softwares. It should be notified beforehand that the ELIFE E7 has its own share of problems to deal with.

During the course of first impressions, there were no problems with the software although the phone heated up a bit. The performance of the software is yet to be tested fully.

The company is taking the Indian market very seriously as it has 2 to 4 percent of its sales being generated here. The company plans to distribute the phones through 25,000 centres. It has no intention of tying up with large online retailers unless the companies decide to sell the phone at MOP. Moreover, it does not intend to drop the prices of phones that Sony and Samsung do quickly after a launch. This will help to build brand value.

Reviewing The Nokia X

Nokia was one of the foremost manufacturers of mobile devices and enjoyed a lot of popularity through the first decade of the millennium. The phones were hardy and user friendly which made them much preferred. However, with the launch of the iPhone and the Android open source mobile software, the popularity of Nokia phones dipped.

The Finnish manufacturer refused to switch over to the new and improved technology that was incorporated into the new phones manufactured by Sony, LG, Samsung and other companies. When it did decide to upgrade its hardware and software, the company chose Windows as its preferred OS. This was another decision that led to a restriction in the sales of Nokia phones. Windows phones lacked the flexibility that was there in Android or iOS which led to slow sales for Nokia. App developers were not much interested in the OS and hence buyers stayed away as they could not download their favourite apps on the phone.
Nokia X

The Windows OS is quite unsuitable for low end phones and to cater to the budget segment, Nokia revamped some of its cell phones with the Symbian software and launched them in the market. Meanwhile, Android became the new buzz word and in the race to the bottom, phones that had Android in them were made available for as low as Rs 5000!

The Nokia X may be touted as an Android device, but it lacks several of Google’s foundation software. For example, Google has a Play Store app, Google Now search bar and Google Maps for navigation. Android licensees need to follow Google’s guidelines and include these apps, which is why Samsung and other phones have these applications.

Since Microsoft has its own range of similar applications, the Android ones have not been installed on them. Instead, Office, Bing Search and Nokia Here maps have been installed on the phone and there are no Google trademark apps anywhere.

The company claims that 75 percent of Android apps will work on the phone. However, the effectiveness of working is doubtful. Applications that use in-app payments, Google push notification and API maps may not work well. Moreover, the Android system used is 4.1.2 which is quite outdated.

The company intends to launch three devices on the Nokia X platform. However, after the take over from Microsoft, it is to be seen whether the company continues with these devices or promoted Windows phones instead.

Hardware of the Phone

The appearance of the device is similar to the Asha 5xx series and is roughly the size of iPhone 4. The sides are completely flat while the back bulges slightly. The phone is available in green, red, yellow, white, and blue and black.

The coloured case fits around the sides and back of the phone and forms a cover around the bezel and black screen. Putting on and taking off the case can be a bit difficult as it fits too snugly.

A single capacitive button has been placed for the home and back button. The screen size is 4 inches. A thin 1500 mAh battery has been placed under the back cover along with a microSD card slot and 2 micro SIM slots. The phone is made of sturdy materials and feels quite expensive.

Specs of the Phone

The Nokia X is not a credible threat to the Lumia 525 in terms of features. The processor used is 1GHz Qualcomm S4 Snapdragon with a A5 Cortex based MSM8225, which was not much high end even two years ago.

The GPU is the Adreno 203 while only 512MB RAM has been fitted in the phone. The phone’s prime objective is price and hence it does not look to uphold multimedia or gaming aspirations.

Built in storage space is only 4GB which can be expanded to 32 GB, using a microSD card. The screen resolution is only 800X480 resolutions. The phone supports 3G data and Bluetooth 3.0 and Wi-Fi b/g/n for wireless connectivity.

FM Radio and GPS have been included too. No secondary camera has been included in the phone that could be used to click selfies or video chat. The primary camera is 3MP which is the lowest specification that a smartphone offers these days.

User Interface of the Phone

The software has been optimized to suit the hardware of the phone. Simple swipes can be used for navigation and animations have been kept simple. A cluster of big icons without spacing shall greet users on the Home screen, which is similar to what is there in Windows 8 phones.

The groups can be tapped for rearranging the icons and each of the icons can be enlarged. The home screen appears as a long list of icons and widgets instead of pages that can be scrolled.

Basic applications have been included in the phones such as alarm clock, calendar, email client, calculator etc. They are quite handy, but not very user friendly. Bing is the default search engine used in the phone although it can be easily changed to Google using a tap on an icon. The email icon supports many accounts and can be set up for popular email services through one step.

Performance of the Phone

The phone is quite slow and several apps do not work accurately. For example, Zomato could not detect the location of the phone based on the GPS signal although it showed restaurants near the location defined.

The phone cannot multitask and hence it could take even days to download and install apps on it.

Basic games perform well on the mobile. However, the browser is quite slow and hence opening 3-4 tabs at a time is inadvisable. The phone can play back videos with resolution up to 720p. However, for H.264 videos, the playback becomes unwatchable as frames are dropped to a good extent.

Despite the camera being only 3MP, the resolution is quite good and photographs are mostly noise free and compression controlled. Focusing of the phone is quite good although its white balance and exposure need to be worked on. Photographs were well detailed in low light shots too.

Videos are recorded at an extremely low resolution of 352X288 and hence the feature should be used in dire emergencies only.

Call quality is quite good and the battery back-up is average. It lasted only 6 hours in a video loop test.

Conclusion

The phone is quite good for its price band of Rs 8,499. However, whether the line would be continued or improved upon is doubtful, especially after Microsoft takes over operations.

The Nokia X series has been launched to tempt users to upgrade to a Windows phone. However, that could act as a double edged sword with users migrating towards Android devices instead of a Windows one.
